Employment Standards for Non-Sworn Positions:

  1. Must be a US Citizen.
  2. Must have a GED or High School Diploma.
  3. Must have a valid Tennessee driver's license.
  4. Must have an honorable discharge from military service (DD-214, if applicable).
  5. Must pass a thorough background investigation (driving record will be considered part of the background.)

Employment Standards for Sworn Positions:

Must meet all of the above requirements PLUS :

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Must meet standards set by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission and adopted by the Tennessee General Assembly on June 24, 1983, T.C.A. 38-8-106.
  3. Must not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or any violation of any Federal or State Laws, or City Ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor, or controlled substances.
  4. Must pass a medical examination.
  5. Must pass a psychological examination.
  6. Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Selection Process

Selection process typically take 4 - 6 weeks, but may vary depending on circumstances.

Reapplication Process

Any canidate that is not selected for a position may reapply for any open position at any time without a waiting period. Additionally, former employees who separated from the department in good standing may apply for any open position at any time. Canidates must meet qualifications for open positions.
