Building your awareness of the most common crimes will enable you to better protect yourself from them. Here are our top 10 tips that will make you less likely to be a victim of crime on campus:
- Reduce time spent alone: Always walk or jog in groups of three or more, especially at night.
- Assess the safety of your locations: Avoid isolated or dark areas.
- Stay aware: Don’t wear headphones while walking or jogging alone.
- Be connected: Know your neighbors and coworkers. Check in on each other.
- Keep entry points secure: Avoid propping doors open, don’t allow strangers to enter after you, and always lock the doors when you leave.
- Keep passwords safe: Don’t share PINs or passwords with anyone and don’t carry them with you. Choose different passwords for different accounts.
- Register your belongings: Mark and record your belongings with our Police Department through Operation ID.
- Know your closest point of contact: Check the on-campus locations of emergency phones.
- Know your emergency contacts: Either write down and memorize emergency contacts or access them easily through the VandySafe app.
