Vanderbilt University Public Safety is launching a drone response program to enhance emergency response, improve situational awareness, and support the safety of our campus community.

This initiative reflects VUPS' continued investment in modern tools and practices that help our teams respond more quickly, make more informed decisions, and better serve the Vanderbilt community.

What is the Drone Response Program?

The VUPS drone response program uses small, remotely operated aircraft to provide real-time visibility during active incidents.

By offering an immediate aerial perspective, drones help first responders assess situations more quickly and coordinate an effective response.

This program is about giving our teams better information in critical moments so we can respond faster, more effectively, and with the safety of our community in mind.

How drones are used

Drones are deployed to support specific public safety operations. Their use is focused on incidents including:

  • Responding to calls for service and emergency incidents
  • Supporting situational awareness during active or evolving situations
  • Assisting with search efforts when individuals may need help
  • Providing additional visibility during large-scale campus events, such as athletic events or major gatherings

Drones can be deployed quickly and provide real-time information that supports faster, more informed decision-making.

Responsible and transparent use

The drone response program is guided by clear expectations for responsible use.

  • Trained operators: Drones are operated by trained and certified VUPS personnel
  • Defined purpose: Deployment helps VUPS respond to incidents, calls for service, and large-scale events
  • Accountability: All activity is documented and governed by established procedures
  • Transparency: VUPS is committed to clearly communicating how and why this technology is used

Supporting a safer campus

Drones enhance VUPS' ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations. By improving visibility in critical moments, they help reduce uncertainty, support coordination, and contribute to safer outcomes for both community members and responders.

This program aligns with national best practices in public safety and reflects Vanderbilt's commitment to maintaining a safe, responsive campus environment.
