August Washington

Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Public Safety and Special Initiatives

August received a Bachelor of General Studies in Behavioral Science from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette and earned a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University. Additionally, he is a member of the International Association of Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police (TACP), where he served as Chair of the University Committee.

August has over 40 years of law enforcement experience with both municipal and campus departments. He began his campus law enforcement career at The University of Louisiana, Lafayette as a Shift Commander and Director of the Student Officer Program. He also served in Director of Public Safety positions at Indiana State University, Florida Atlantic University, Deputy Chief at the University of Southern California, and served as the Chief of Police at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House and the Grace M. Eaton Daycare Board.

August began his career at Vanderbilt in 2009, and serves as an administrator in planning, directing, and managing the comprehensive law enforcement, general security services, dignitary protection, and emergency preparedness services to all components of Vanderbilt University including the academic campus, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, One Hundred Oaks, and a number of University owned facilities throughout the Davidson County area. He also oversees residential life security, workforce safety, fire safety, operational continuity, parking and transportation services, diversity and inclusion efforts and workforce development. Under August’s leadership, the Vanderbilt University Police Department became the first law enforcement agency in Tennessee to be triple accredited (CALEA, IACLEA, and TLEA), and additionally saw the department’s Communications Unit become accredited. In 2015, August and Vanderbilt hosted the highly successful IACLEA Annual Conference. In that same year, he was named “Middle Tennessee Chief of the Year” by the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police.

Tommye Sutton

Deputy Chief of Police

Tommye Sutton currently serves as Deputy Chief of Police at the Vanderbilt University Police Department. His career has included executive level service at the University of Virginia as Chief of Police, the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and Vanderbilt University. He possesses demonstrated experience leading police, security, and emergency management teams at Tier I research institutions and global branch campuses with nationally recognized medical facilities and student enrollment of more than 20,000.  His professional expertise includes fair and equitable policing strategies with a focus on accountability, inclusiveness, mutual respect, and performance measurement.

His passion for service has afforded him extensive professional experience in building and maintaining relationships with a wide array of constituents to achieve satisfactory service delivery while implementing industry standard performance accountability measures. His current role includes leading Patrol Operations, Investigations, Technology and Security Initiatives, Training, Emergency Communications, Dignitary Protection, and Records serving Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and Vanderbilt Health at 100 Oaks.

A native of Greenville, Mississippi, Sutton is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor’s degree in English. He earned his master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Tennessee State University.  He is also a graduate of Northwestern University's Center for Public Safety - School of Police Staff and Command, and Session 58 of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department Police Academy.  Sutton is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP); the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA); the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE); and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Steven Engstrom

Assistant Chief of Police

Steven Engstrom is the Assistant Chief of Medical Center operations. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Bethel University and a Masters of Criminal Justice from Bethel University. He graduated from the Metro Nashville Police Training Academy in 2008. Additionally, he is nationally certified as a “Train the Trainer” Police Training Officer.

Prior to his career with Vanderbilt, Capt. Engstrom was a Firefighter II and Hazmat Specialist for the City of Savage, Minnesota.

Prior to his current assignment, Capt. Engstrom served as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Patrol Sergeant, Sergeant Detective, Emergency Management Sergeant, Lieutenant of the Dignitary Protection Unit, and Captain of the Accreditation and Compliance unit. In his current role, he oversees the safety, security, and law enforcement operations for the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Patrick Conwell

Police Inspector & Chief Security Officer

Patrick Conwell is a Police Inspector and the Chief Security Officer for Vanderbilt University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Homeland Security from Austin Peay State University and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Bethel University. A graduate of the Southeastern Leadership Academy, he received both the Leadership Award and the Innovator Award. He is certified as a RADAR instructor, emergency vehicle operations instructor, response to terrorist bombings instructor, and crash investigator. An active member of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police, he serves on both the technology and university committees.

Prior to his career at Vanderbilt, Inspector Conwell served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Afghanistan as the Executive Officer for a logistics and transportation unit. While deployed, he commanded the Tactical Operations Center and oversaw all combat missions for his unit. After returning from Afghanistan, he was promoted to Captain and assigned as the Battalion Special Projects Officer (Transportation) and Battalion Battle Captain. His distinguished service earned him several accolades, including the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal, and he was named Officer of the Year for his battalion.

In his law enforcement career, Inspector Conwell has served as a patrol officer, community relations liaison, explosive detection canine handler, instructor, shift supervisor, technical services captain, and major of the campus patrol precinct. In his current role, he oversees the physical and security-technology standards and readiness for Vanderbilt University. Additionally, he manages the department’s body-worn camera program and assists with data and crime analysis, dignitary protection, internal affairs investigations, accreditation and compliance, and policy review.

Michael Pring | Police Inspector & Chief Security Officer

Police Inspector & Chief Security Officer

Michael Pring is the Captain of Vanderbilt University Medical Center Community Relations and Crime Prevention for Vanderbilt University Public Safety. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Middle Tennessee State University. He is a member of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety where he serves on a number of committees to include finance oversight, professional standards, university committee, leadership and membership development, and future leaders in public safety. He is a 2018 graduate from the Southeastern Leadership Academy. He is a Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator, Rape Aggression Defense instructor, and certified in Crime Prevention through Environmental Design.

Prior to his career at Vanderbilt University, Captain Pring worked for several large retailers where he developed and implemented business activities specifically designed to reduce preventable loss. It was during this time where he worked closely with a number of law enforcement agencies which ultimately led him to Vanderbilt University Public Safety.

Prior to his current assignment, Captain Pring was assigned to the Patrol Division where he began as a patrol officer working his way up through the ranks to Lieutenant. In his current assignment, he serves the Vanderbilt University Medical Center as the Community Relations and Crime Prevention Officer, assists with accreditation and compliance through The Joint Commission, provides consultation and oversight for security and safety for VUMC offsite locations to include Walk-In Clinics as well as Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital as well as working closely with the Office of Legal Affairs to ensure policies are consistent between Vanderbilt University Public Safety and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He also represents VUPS by serving on the University Staff Advisory Council where he has held the positions of President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Committee Chair.
